Bicolored potted lily wins Retailers' Choice Award at Cultivate 2025

At Cultivate 2025 in Columbus, Ohio (USA), the pot lily Tiny Massive took home the Retailers' Choice Award for Best New Product. This award-winning variety is part of the Lily Looks Sensation series, developed by the Dutch company Arroyo Liliumbulbs in collaboration with Mak Breeding.

Arroyo Liliumbulbs shares ownership with Wetering Potlilium, the nursery responsible for producing these pot lilies for the European market. The variety was entered into the competition by 2Plant International, a U.S.-based distributor of Lily Looks bulbs.

'Tiny Massive'
Tiny Massive is a compact, scentless Asiatic pot lily featuring a striking black-and-yellow bloom. This eye-catching variety is part of the Sensation series, which includes genetically short, bi-colored cultivars specially bred for potted plant production.

"These varieties are incredibly popular thanks to their unique flower patterns," says Bianca van de Wetering from Wetering Potlilium. "The key features of the Sensation series are: abundant flowering, lush evergreen foliage, no fragrance, bi-colored blooms that add a touch of exclusivity, and a naturally compact growth habit."

Lily Looks by Wetering Potlilium
Based in Den Hoorn, the company operates a state-of-the-art production facility covering 72,000 m², with most of the cultivation done on rolling benches. While the finished plants are grown for the European market, their bulbs are shipped to customers around the globe.

The collaboration with breeder Mak Breeding began in 2006, with the goal of selecting new Asiatic pot lily varieties specifically for Wetering Potlilium. Just one year later, the breeding program had advanced to the point where year-round production became possible. In 2007, Arroyo Liliumbulbs was founded to ensure in-house bulb production, and by 2008, pot orientals were also added to the Lily Looks brand.

Connection with North America
That same year, entrepreneurs Frank Riteco and Pieter van der Lans launched 2Plant International, becoming one of the official distributors of Lily Looks bulbs in North America.

Now, nearly two decades later, their efforts have paid off in a big way, as this year they took home the Retailers' Choice Award for Best New Product at Cultivate 2025 with Lily Looks 'Tiny Massive'.

Novelty at Plantarium|Groen-Direkt
Back home in the Netherlands, Wetering Potlilium is also showcasing a brand-new pot lily. At Plantarium|Groen-Direkt, Lilium 'Summer Sun' has been submitted for judging in the Best Novelty category.

"These LA lilies, like Lilium 'Summer Sun', are the result of a cross between Longiflorum and Asiatic lilies," explains Bianca. "They've been bred for heat tolerance, vibrant color, and upward-facing blooms. And Summer Sun delivers on all fronts, with bold, upward-pointing flowers in a striking, intense yellow and a bloom period of around 16 days."
