On the final day of the Dutch walking event 'de Nijmeegse Vierdaagse', more than 15,000 gladiolus flowers were handed out to walkers. The gladiolus, a symbol of strength and victory, was offered to all participants in the 40 and 50-kilometer categories by the growers of VIGO Gladiolus, in partnership with their industry contacts.
"This event has become a real tradition," says Ted Kortekaas of VIGO Gladiolus. "It's a great way for us to put the gladiolus in the spotlight. But it's also a fantastic opportunity to get together with colleagues, customers, and partners."
The flowers were distributed at the Van der Valk Hotel in Molenhoek, where guests were treated to snacks and drinks. "It was a diverse crowd," Ted shares. "From clients and coworkers to friendly competitors, the entire gladiolus industry was well represented. Even auctioneers from Royal FloraHolland were there!"
Ted is optimistic about this year's gladiolus season. "The crop is doing well in the field. In previous years, rain made things difficult, but this year we've actually had to irrigate quite a bit. I'm also hearing from growers that weed pressure is higher than usual. Still, because we planted early and the weather has been favorable, we're about two weeks ahead of schedule compared to the average season."
Ted is also pleased with how gladiolus bulb sales are going this year. "Sales have been strong," he says. "We're well on our way to selling out. Last week, the planted acreage for next season was announced, and it shows only a small difference—just a few hectares. On average, we're in a good position."
White and red remain the dominant colors in the market, continuing their popularity among buyers.
All in all, it wasn't just a successful day for handing out flowers—the gladiolus crop itself is thriving this year, both in the field and in sales.
