Dutch start-up digitizes plant care with smart assistant

Dutch houseplant potting soil specialist Sybotanica has launched SYBAScan, an AI-powered tool designed to make plant care easier and more accessible for plant owners across Europe.

Using machine learning, SYBAScan can identify plant species and offer tailored advice on potting soil, pots, fertilizers, and support structures like moss poles. The aim is to reduce plant loss, and the frustration that comes with it, for both beginners and seasoned plant enthusiasts.

By helping people make better care decisions, Sybotanica hopes to cut down on unnecessary plant waste and reduce the environmental impact of discarded houseplants. Healthier plants mean fewer replacements and lower resource use.

"Many people want to care for their plants properly, but often don't have clear, reliable information," says Sybotanica founder Sybren Bies. "With SYBAScan, we want to take the guesswork out of plant care and make it easier for people to enjoy healthy, happy plants at home."

The tool currently supports over 25,000 species of houseplants and is updated regularly as new data becomes available. It is free to use and available online in multiple European languages, including Dutch, German, and French.

What began as a small student project has grown into a company known for its sustainable, plant-specific potting soils and care products. Today, Sybotanica serves more than 80,000 customers across Europe.
