“Kenyan growers show growing interest in Santinis”

Icon Selections, based with selection and showhouse for Africa at United Selections' farm in Nakuru, Kenya, for 1.5 years, is steadily making its mark in the floriculture industry. Since June last year, the first commercial plantings have been taking place. With more cuttings coming in, production volumes are increasing quickly.

A major focus is on the Santini line. While Santinis are well known in the Dutch market, interest among Kenyan growers is now rising. The varieties fit well into bouquet lines and prove to be easy to cultivate in Kenya. For instance, the Nebula series, a daisy-type Santini, is performing very well under local conditions.

"The key advantage is that the breeding originates in South America, close to the equator," says James Nyokabi of United Selections. "This makes the varieties easily adaptable to the African climate. They don't require much growth regulation and are easy to grow."

Currently, the company is producing over 150,000 cuttings per week, underlining the strong demand and the growing recognition of Icon Selections as a South American breeder with a firm focus on the Kenyan market.

Icon Selections is a Colombian Chrysanthemum Breeding company established in 2014, with operation facilities in Rionegro and Bogotá.
