Flowerbulb.eu releases Spanish lily guide for growers

© Flowerbulb.euFlowerbulb.eu has a clear mission: to inspire gardeners to "fall in love with spring bulbs."

The organization promotes flower bulbs worldwide by guiding new gardeners, reminding experienced ones of planting times, and carrying out technical research on bulb production. Now, it has launched a Spanish-language guide for lily cultivation, aiming to support growers of one of the most in-demand flowers in the ornamental sector. Thanks to its wide range of hybrids, ease of production, and commercial potential, the lily has become a valuable crop for both large-scale operations and smaller producers.

Most popular varieties
Among the most sought-after hybrids are the Oriental Stargazers, available in single, double, and pollen-free forms. OT hybrids, crosses between Orientals and tetraploids, are known for their large, fragrant, long-lasting flowers. Asian hybrids stand out for their resilience and abundance of buds, while LA hybrids, a cross between Asian and Lilium longiflorum, have gained ground thanks to their wide color range, resistance, and vase life.

Logistics and ordering
Access to high-quality bulbs is key for supply chains. Suppliers usually offer standard boxes (200–400 bulbs, depending on size) as well as mixed assortments to stagger flowering. Special bulbs are also available for strategic production windows, such as Mother's Day.

The sector has largely embraced Box Cultivation, a system that provides more consistent control and shorter greenhouse cycles. This approach simplifies substrate preparation (coco fiber, soil mixes), disinfection, and ensures greater uniformity in flower quality.

Pre-rooting at low temperatures (around 49 °F) accelerates root development before sprouting, resulting in stronger plants that are less prone to nutritional deficiencies.

Harvest and post-harvest
The optimal cutting stage is when the first buds show color and volume but remain closed. After harvest, lower leaves should be removed and stems kept in refrigerated water (35–41 °F). An important market practice is the early removal of stamens, which prevents pollen stains and improves product presentation.

Prospects for the sector
Asian and LA hybrids stand out for their rapid growth and lack of fragrance, while Orientals and OTs bring stronger aroma and greater visual impact. Ultimately, hybrid selection, combined with precise crop management and a reliable cold chain, are decisive factors in delivering high-quality lilies with strong vase performance.
