Montreal-based Planteva Farms has announced two major milestones: a first closing of $2.75 million as part of its $4.5 million seed round, and a strategic partnership with Swedish cultivation technology supplier PlantVation AB to introduce a Seedling-as-a-Service model across North America.
Weber Family Farms of Petaluma, California led the investment. "This partnership provides the momentum to complete our first facility in Montreal while laying the groundwork for our next farm in California," says Bryce Nagels, CEO of Planteva. "Together, we are building the next generation of plant nurseries, blending CEA, greenhouse production, and even field farming to deliver healthier plants and higher yields."

Seedling-as-a-Service and the Montreal build
Planteva's agreement with PlantVation AB centers on deploying the company's QS GreenBox-Stationary systems for efficient, automated seedling propagation. The Montreal facility will be equipped with two GreenBox units, providing capacity for over 50 million seedlings and transplants, according to PlantVation, annually once fully operational in 2026.
"The QS GreenBox ensures uniform growth by continuously moving seedlings, delivering highly consistent treatment of vital growth parameters. Centralized irrigation keeps chambers clean and disease-free. Flexible rotation enables harvesting at any time, making seedling cultivation more efficient, reliable, and scalable," says Johanna Westman, Co-Founder and CEO of PlantVation AB.
Technology and support
"Farmers face pressure from all sides, including environment, labor, and rising input costs," says Nagels. "Our model improves profitability without adding costs. Healthier seedlings mean better yields, stronger pest resistance, and more consistent growth and delivery. Because our plants are raised in fully controlled conditions, they avoid the fluctuations typical of greenhouse nurseries."
"PlantVation delivers a full turnkey solution: installation, commissioning, hands-on training for Planteva's team, and remote support. We work side by side to secure a smooth ramp-up, stable operations, and long-term performance excellence," says Westman.
"This collaboration is an important milestone in the company's international expansion. We are proud to be Planteva's chosen supplier of cultivation technology," she says. "This partnership is both a continuation of our long tradition in horticulture and a step forward in bringing sustainable and efficient cultivation technology to growers worldwide, ensuring the best possible start for seedlings."

Crops, protocols, and segments
"We're starting with lettuce, leafy greens, and herbs for local indoor farms, while also trialing field crops like lettuce, onion, and celery, all with outstanding results in vigor and yield," says Nagels.
"In greenhouses, we're advancing tomato propagation and pioneering new strawberry protocols to help growers overcome challenges like Neopestalotiopsis, a disease that has devastated strawberry greenhouse operations across Canada."
"We have proven the model of focusing on the most critical step, seedling production. This strengthens growers, enhances sustainability, and provides a scalable system that integrates seamlessly with existing operations," says Westman.
Scale-out plan and remaining raise
"Our next step is a state-of-the-art site in Quebec, timed alongside our expansion into California. Both can move forward in parallel," says Nagels. "Quebec strengthens our base in Canada and extends into Ontario, while in California, we're targeting the massive transplant market. From there, we see strong opportunity in British Columbia's Lower Mainland, where interest is already growing."
"We're raising the final $1.75 million to close our $4.5 million seed round, with room to oversubscribe for the right partners," he adds. "We're looking for investors who bring operational vision and hands-on expertise, and who want to build value through revenue, infrastructure, and scalable growth. Demand is virtually unlimited, and with our science-based, results-driven approach, paired with PlantVation's proven technology, we see a true win-win opportunity."
"This partnership marks PlantVation's entry into North America, building on our collaboration with Planteva. Starting with horticulture, we see opportunities in forestry and beyond. Together, we create value by complementing each other's strengths and expanding sustainable seedling production," says Westman.
