At this year's Seed Meets Technology event, Van den Berg Klimaattechniek showcased a new seed drying chamber that also provides heat treatment to combat fungal infections. "And it does so in a completely natural way, without the use of chemicals," emphasized co-owner Stephen Geenen.
Developed in collaboration with a seed production and breeding company, the new climate chamber combines two key functions: seed conditioning and drying, and controlled heat treatment. With this dual-purpose system, customers no longer need two separate units for these processes.
For example, the chamber can treat seeds for 72 hours at 78°C, after which the temperature and humidity are gradually brought down to 25°C and 30% relative humidity. "A programmable controller allows users to set precise treatment cycles within a range of 10–80°C and 10–85% RH. Above 40°C, the chamber functions as a heat treatment unit, while below 40°C, it operates as a drying cabinet," Geenen explained.
The chambers are also mobile, making them easy to move between different research or production areas. Van den Berg Klimaattechniek's drying cabinets are already in use at major vegetable and flower seed laboratories, as well as by growers who dry their own seeds for production or research purposes. With over 30 years of experience in manufacturing drying equipment, the company has become a familiar name, and a regular participant, at Seed Meets Technology.
