New Zealand: Passing on a love for growing

Olivia Turner recalls her mother Deborah allocating a piece of the garden for her and one for her brother on most weekends on their farm in Riversdale.

"I remember thinking I wanted a bigger allocation and I remember wanting to choose what was in there and not what was just established."

Now, as a mother to Amelia, 2, and her second child due in about three weeks, Ms Turner is in the middle of her first tulip harvest at her Luggate property. Having seen the nearby Wanaka Lavender Farm and Red Bridge Berries succeed in the local and tourism market, Ms Turner and her partner Mark Rapsey bought their 5ha section years ago, where they have hand-planted 7000 bulbs in 10 varieties.

"The shapes range from simple to very intricate and it is lovely when you put them together," Ms Turner said. "The idea was to see if the tulips would grow up here well, just knowing that they do like a bit of water. Thankfully, we have had this beautiful wet spring."
