Patagonia blooms with new tulip varieties

At the "Tulipanes de la Patagonia" farm in Trevelin, Chubut, visitors can appreciate tulips flowering during the month of October. This event is a way for Trevelin to showcase new tulip varieties, culminating with a petal shower on November 7th. This marks not only the end of the event, but also the end of the flowering season.

The main focus is on the bulbs, which are marketed when they reach 20 centimetres in diameter, while the smaller bulbs are kept in cold storage to restart the production cycle at a later date. This year, 2025, the season is also introducing twelve new varieties, as Juan Carlos Ledesma explains.

Tulip bulbs are obviously the stars of the show. Those that reach 20 cm in diameters make their way into the market, while smaller ones are kept in cold storage for a later production cycle. This year, twelve new varieties are being introduced. "We can't wait to see how these varieties have performed", explains Ledesma. Currently, there are 42 varieties about to flower for a total of round four million flowers. This result could also be achieved thanks to the increased cultivation area, with 1 additional hectare devoted to production.

There's also a new dome structure to shield visitors from the renowned weather conditions of Patagonia. "People who feel a little cold can now enjoy the show without worrying much about the weather," Ledesma says.

The experience of visiting the tulip farm also includes cultural activities. Local bands play live music while visitors can enjoy tea with scones and the famous Welsh cake from a deck strategically placed for a better view.

The event has been running since October 7th.
