Recyclable bouquet box offers solution for Kalanchoe bouquets

DS Smith has teamed up with Queen® Flowers to create a fully recyclable bouquet box. Designed to stand out next to the brand's traditional in-store packaging, the new box offers a fresh and eye-catching presentation for flower displays.

Made from corrugated cardboard, the bouquet box can hold three to five Kalanchoë bouquets. It comes with two different lid options: one with five openings for smaller bouquets, and another with three openings for larger arrangements.

The bottom lid has been designed to fit easily into the box's short handles—no glue required. The user-friendly design has smooth edges, making it simple to assemble. The top lid reduces excess air inside the box, which helps cut down unnecessary weight during transport. It also helps maintain the right moisture level, keeping the bouquets fresh from supplier to point of sale.

Emilie Stærmose, Chief Marketing Officer at Queen Flowers, explained: "We wanted a package that could easily be printed with our brand, so we'd be more visible in stores. This design is much more effective than how our bouquets were previously displayed. The moisture retention and protection these new DS Smith boxes offer, alongside their sustainability and recyclability, are key features of the design and our overall strategy. We're very interested to hear how our customers experience this new packaging, as their feedback is extremely valuable to us."

The eco-friendly packaging highlights Queen Flowers' brand identity with striking graphics and a high-quality print surface that enhances shelf visibility and online presentation. Once used, the boxes can simply be placed in the cardboard recycling bin, ready to re-enter the recycling loop.

In developing the design, DS Smith used its unique Circular Design Metrics, a first in the packaging industry. This innovative approach enables designers to create packaging that uses fewer materials, lowers CO₂ emissions, and is easier to recycle. The new bouquet box offers a sustainable alternative to the brand's traditional black display buckets. By gaining deep insights into its customers' operations and supply chains, DS Smith delivers packaging solutions that meet both business needs and consumer expectations.

Circular Design Metrics (CDM) is DS Smith's proprietary tool for evaluating how circular a packaging design is, based on eight key performance indicators. It provides a clear picture of a design's strengths and shows where improvements can be made. This helps brands take concrete steps toward sustainability by reducing waste and pollution and keeping materials in use for longer.

Through its purpose-driven Now & Next sustainability strategy, titled "Redefining Packaging for a Changing World," DS Smith continues to lead the transition toward a circular economy. The company's goal is to provide sustainable, circular packaging solutions that make a real difference for its customers and for the planet.
