Colombia's floriculture industry generates over 2 billion dollars in exports each year, making it a key driver of the national economy. With more than 1,600 varieties across 60 different flower species, Colombia is the world's second-largest flower exporter. Around 80 to 90 percent of its production is destined for international markets. The industry provides jobs for approximately 200,000 people, 60 percent of whom are women who are the main breadwinners for their families. More than half of Colombia's flower exports proudly carry the Florverde Sustainable Flowers certification, highlighting the sector's commitment to responsible and sustainable practices.
The United States has long been Colombia's primary export destination, but within the European Union, the Netherlands takes the lead as the most important market—and ranks among the largest globally. Between January and July 2025, Colombian flower exports to the Netherlands grew by 3.6 percent compared to the same period in 2024, rising from 36.6 to 37.9 million US dollars (FOB).

Colombia and the Netherlands: a strategic alliance
Colombia's success in ornamental growing is rooted in a blend of favorable natural and logistical conditions. "First of all, our location gives us a great advantage: a mild climate and fertile soils that are ideal for flower cultivation. On top of that, we benefit from excellent logistics, with access to both oceans and El Dorado Airport, which serves as a major hub for Latin America," explains Jan Willem van Bokhoven, Managing Director of the Colombian-Dutch Chamber of Commerce – Holland House Colombia.
The partnership with the Netherlands has been essential in unlocking the full potential of these advantages. The Netherlands not only serves as a key importer and distributor of Colombian flowers throughout Europe, but also brings valuable innovation to the sector. "Dutch companies have introduced new varieties, developed smart solutions for water management and clean energy, improved logistics, and created advanced postharvest automation systems—among many other innovations," adds Van Bokhoven.
This collaboration extends far beyond trade alone. Dutch presence is strong at major events such as Proflora and Chrysanthemum Week, where Dutch companies operating in Colombia showcase their latest varieties and innovation strategies. "These international trade fairs place Colombia at the heart of global floral trends," says Van Bokhoven.
Events that stimulate innovation
Held annually in Antioquia, Chrysanthemum Week attracts hundreds of international visitors and brings them together with Dutch companies active in Colombia. Participants include Dümmen Orange, Floritec, Royal Van Zanten, Dekker Chrysanten, and Deliflor. "It's a fantastic platform for our industry. We want to inspire visitors not just with new varieties, but also with creative experiences that promote the use and appreciation of flowers," says Alejandra Fernández, Marketing Leader LATAM at Dümmen Orange. The event symbolizes not only innovation but also the close collaboration between Colombia and the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, Proflora, the biennial flower trade fair held in Bogotá, serves as a major meeting point for growers, exporters, buyers, and other key players in the floriculture industry. The event offers a perfect opportunity to discover emerging trends, explore new varieties, and build valuable business relationships. At the same time, Proflora showcases the quality, creativity, and innovation that define Colombian floriculture. "All of this makes Colombia an attractive partner for markets around the world," Fernández adds.
Collaboration as an engine for growth
With its adaptability, creativity, and strong focus on sustainability, Colombia's floriculture industry continues to strengthen its position as a competitive player in the global market. This growth is further powered by its collaboration with the Netherlands—not only as a major buyer, but also through the active presence of Dutch companies in Colombia that contribute innovative, forward-thinking solutions to the sector.
