Takeaways from IFTF 2025

"It's about seeing the future of our industry"

The Floral Express Wholesale team recently visited the International Floriculture Trade Fair (IFTF) 2025 in the Netherlands, returning with fresh inspiration and valuable insights into the global floral market. The team was highly impressed by the vast display of new floral varieties and the strong sense of innovation driving the industry forward. The event's focus on high-tech solutions highlighted the ongoing commitment to excellence and efficiency within the world of floriculture.

According to William Overbeek, Operations Planning and Logistics at Floral Express, three major themes stood out during the visit. The first was technology, with new machines and advanced systems promising to enhance efficiency and quality control throughout the floral supply chain. The second was the introduction of new flower varieties, many offering improved color and longer vase life, opening opportunities to introduce fresh selections to North American customers. The third was the growing prominence of African roses, whose rising quality and production volume are making them an increasingly important factor in the North American floral market.

A strong emphasis on sustainability and innovation was evident across the IFTF 2025 exhibition floor. This focus reflects a shift in industry priorities and aligns closely with Floral Express's ongoing efforts to strengthen sustainable sourcing practices. Sustainability continues to be a guiding principle in the company's operations, ensuring that environmental responsibility remains central to its long-term strategy.

Many suppliers showcased eco-friendly packaging alternatives, moving away from single-use plastics toward compostable wraps, plant-based netting, and innovative shipping solutions that rely on humidity control instead of water bags. These developments point toward a more sustainable supply chain. In addition, there was a clear trend toward reducing carbon footprints through practices such as closed-loop irrigation systems, the use of geothermal energy, and the adoption of biological controls to limit pesticide use. These advancements reinforce the alignment between the industry's direction and Floral Express's goal of providing an environmentally conscious product line.

William Overbeek sums up the value: "The IFTF is where the world's floral industry converges. For Floral Express, it's about seeing the future of our industry, understanding the shift towards sustainability and automation, and building the personal connections that will ensure we bring the highest quality, most innovative, and most reliable floral products back home to North America."
