Marigold cultivation pays off for Indian flower grower

Naresh Yadav, a young farmer from Mawadi village in Kotputli-Behror district, has made farming highly profitable through innovation. After completing his MSc in Agriculture, he shifted from traditional crops to cash crops and experimented with marigold flowers. His success is now inspiring nearby farmers.

Naresh completed his MSc in Agronomy in 2021. His family wanted him to prepare for a government job. However, he was more interested in farming. He wanted to use what he learned to improve agricultural practices.

At first, his father Bhup Singh Yadav and elder brother Dinesh Yadav were hesitant. Later, they agreed. They told him to take any land from their 9 bighas and try his ideas, as long as he avoided losses.

Naresh started with crops like chili, brinjal, spinach, fenugreek, garlic, and onion. These crops earned more profit than traditional crops like mustard, barley, wheat, millet, and cluster bean. He wanted higher profits from smaller land. After studying crops that use less water and are less prone to diseases, he decided to try flower cultivation.
