New hibiscus variety named after Dutch Ambassador to the Philippines

A constant in Filipino backyards, the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, or gumamela, stands as a familiar sight in every barrio and town plaza. More than a garden favorite, this flower captures hearts through both its simplicity and resilience.

As part of the Hibiscus Diplomat Series, UPLB, through the Institute of Plant Breeding (IPB), unveiled a new hibiscus variety, the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Marielle Geraedts', dedicated to Her Excellency Marielle Geraedts, ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Philippines.

The ceremony held on October 17, 2025, at the SEARCA Residence Hotel, Los Banos, Laguna, not only celebrated a new floral creation but also the vibrant friendship and partnership between the Philippines and the Netherlands.

The newly developed hibiscus features ruffled orange blooms and a striking purplish-pink eye that softly fades into a halo of light purple veins, evoking the warmth of the tropics and the brilliance of sunrise. As the day progresses, its petals transform into a brilliant yellow canvas streaked with vivid orange, which also represents the Dutch national color and serves as a thoughtful nod to her homeland, symbolizing pride, creativity, and energy.

In dedicating this flower, IPB highlighted how the 'Marielle Geraedts' embodies Her Excellency's grace, openness, and natural ability to bring people together. Like the hibiscus that thrives in sunlight and radiates beauty year-round, Ambassador Geraedts has shown optimism in nurturing partnerships.

The presentation of the new hibiscus varieties continues IPB's tradition of naming and dedicating its hybrid hibiscus flowers to distinguished personalities who have made significant contributions to national and international partnerships. Dr. Maria Luisa D. Gueverra, a researcher and career scientist, developed the variety under the Hibiscus Breeding Program of IPB with funding support from DOST-PCAARRD.

This initiative aims to promote appreciation of ornamental plants while highlighting the role of scientific breeding in advancing Philippine horticulture. The introduction of the gumamela hybrid 'Marielle Geraedts' marks another milestone for IPB in continuing its mission to cultivate not only exceptional flower varieties but also enduring connections across nations.
