US (FL): Family-owned nursery in Bradenton gears up for return of annual holiday flower event

The folks at Orban's Nursery in Bradenton are getting ready for a busy weekend. The nursery will host its annual Poinsettia Open House event this Saturday. For many families, the event has become an annual tradition to help kick off the holiday season.

For the first time in more than 30 years, the event had to be cancelled in 2023 due to damage from the back-to-back hurricanes. It was the first time in more than 100 years that the family-owned nursery did not have a poinsettia season. They suffered around $1 million in damages.

"We had like four feet of saltwater across the whole nursery, so all the poinsettias, all the annuals that we were growing before, we lost. Then, during Milton, we lost our old office. We lost the roof off our barn. All of our plastic on all of our greenhouses. It blew down a bunch of our shade houses. It has been a lot of work to get back to something, a new normal," said Tyler Orban.

"We had like 200 people come out and help us and then yeah, the sales to get us to this point have been amazing," said Orban. The event will feature around 40,000 poinsettias, fewer than in past years. Orban said there will also be food trucks, holiday picture areas, arts and crafts and more. It is a family-friendly event.
