Looking back at January 1-15, 2025

A focus on Europe, MANTS, and the color of the year

The year 2025 started off with lots of news! Suntory Flowers Europe was launched, the MANTS trade show happened in Baltimore and the industry had a new Pantone Color of the Year to work with: Mocha Mousse. Let's take a look back at what happened during the first two weeks of January 2025.

"With the launch of Suntory Flowers Europe, we are aiming to accelerate our foreign business operations"

A new year brings global opportunities. Last fall, Suntory Flowers Limited acquired European partner MNP (Moerheim New Plants) in The Netherlands, as part of its initiative to expand business in Europe. This new venture will enhance Suntory's business in bedding plants, as well as fresh-cut flowers. MNP is now officially Suntory Flowers Europe B.V.

Snowy Baltimore weather doesn't freeze the energy at MANTS

After two days, the 55th edition of the Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show (MANTS) will come to a close today, Friday January 10. So, there's one more day left to connect with industry partners and explore what's on offer at the Baltimore Convention Centre. So far, it seems that the vibes are good with plenty of opportunities to do business. Yesterday, we already shared an impression of some exhibitors and their booths. Today we share another one, which includes some plants that have drawn the attention of Maria Zampini, President of UpShoot, who is present at the show.

"Pantone Color of the Year 2025 calls for luxurious, textural, abundant florals"

"'Mocha Mousse', a soft and muted brown color recently announced as the Pantone Color of the Year 2025, appeals to the desire for well-being by recalling the exquisiteness of a warm cup of coffee or the pleasure of good chocolate. The color represents a sensation of comfort, safety, and warmth while tinged with luxury and awe.

Florabundance flowers and warehouse featured in Netflix series 'With Love, Meghan'

California-based Florabundance is delighted that their flowers and warehouse will be showcased in Season 1 of 'With Love, Meghan', a Netflix series starring Meghan Markle. However, considering the challenging circumstances in the state and the shared commitment to supporting recovery efforts, Netflix has chosen to postpone the project launch. With Netflix's full support and at Meghan's request (California is her home state), the release date has been rescheduled to March 4, instead of January 15.

"We have developed packaging suitable for delivery to customers directly from the farm"

"More and more of our customers want to buy directly from South Africa," say Noud Visschers and Kristel Emmerik of FreshCap. It is a trend they have been observing for the past year, but it intensified after the Trade Fair last November.

Bloomia is seeing double… Double Tulips

The Northern Hemisphere tulip season is in full swing. But will there be enough tulips? "Everybody between the United States and Holland is talking about the uncertainty in the tulip market. We saw this on the horizon and have secured our bulbs for both classics and double varieties", says Werner Jansen, CEO at Bloomia, a year-round tulip grower based in King George Virginia. Their Double Tulip program kicks off on February 17th and runs through Mother's Day.

US: Examining the floral trends of the year ahead

"Overall, it was a good year for Alberta growers"

In Alberta, the days are long in the summer and very short in the winter. Now, with 2025 just starting, it's a good occasion to talk to Michiel Verheul, president of the Alberta Greenhouse Growers Association (AGGA), to reflect on the past year. The AGGA consists of 400 independent growers that mostly grow vegetables, ornamentals, or bedding plants. Overall, Verheul thinks it was a good year for Alberta growers. "A cold start to the year that affected us all with low light hindering production, and cold nights - even frost - in most areas into June. Then summer showed up and all was forgotten. Followed by a 'so far' excellent fall which makes our outlook to longer days a lot easier to take."
