Looking back at February 16-28

Myplant & Garden, clematis breeding, and South Africa's national flower

What happened during the second half of February 2025? Valentine's Day was behind us, but of course, it was still a hot topic of conversation. The ninth edition of the Italian trade show Myplant & Garden also happened this month, which had increased in size and number of attendees. We also discussed clematis breeding and what it's like to grow South Africa's national flower. Let's have a read.

A flourishing Valentine's Day for the US floral industry

"Valentine's Day remains one of the most significant sales periods for the floral industry, with consumer demand surging across retail, mass-market, and wholesale channels. Despite economic concerns and price sensitivity, floral sales in 2025 were robust in the U.S., demonstrating the industry's resilience amid logistical and seasonal challenges. Some retailers reported record-breaking sales while others maintained consistent sales compared to 2024", Joost Bongaerts concludes after speaking to numerous retailers across the country. Besides being CEO of Florabundance, Inc., a specialty floral wholesaler based in Carpinteria, California, shipping nationwide since 1994, Joost also serves as a director of Cal Flowers, has been an ambassador for That Flower Feeling since its inception, and actively supports its national campaign and fundraising efforts, advocating for the joy and benefits of flowers in daily life. In this article, he shares his key findings.

Beekenkamp Group and Dümmen Orange confirm no expanded partnership

Beekenkamp Group and Dümmen Orange have mutually concluded the exploration phase of a potential deeper collaboration, following discussions that began in October 2024. How do you correct liverwort in the greenhouse?

In ornamental and container crops, liverwort can be a persistent problem, especially during the wet months. Liverworts thrive in these wet conditions and can quickly spread over pots, containers and other growing surfaces. This hinders the plants' uptake of nutrients, which can lead to growth retardation and deficiency symptoms in the long run. In addition, liverwort significantly reduces ornamental value. Using the agent MossKade offers an effective solution to this problem, says supplier and manufacturer HortiPro. ""When applied correctly, the environmentally friendly agent can control moss without negative effects on the plant and its surroundings."

Dutch grower harvests first chrysanthemums in Kenya

The first bunches of chrysanthemums have been harvested at Van Helvoort Company in Kenya. On the 2ha farm near Lake Naivasha, one hectare has been harvested last week. This first harvest is for International Women's Day.

"We should better communicate our sustainability strides"

Two weeks ago, Valentine's Day was celebrated—a peak season for many flower growers, especially rose growers. Unfortunately, this time of year also brings negative and often misleading headlines, such as 'The Thorny Side of Valentine's Day', which frequently appear in local media. These stories deeply sadden not only flower growers but also industry organizations like the Kenya Flower Council, which has been dedicated to improving the sector and advancing sustainability efforts since 1996.

Growing South Africa's national flower

Located on a mountain, Piket-bo-berg, in the Piketberg region of South Africa, Bugler's Post Farms showcases the unique beauty of Cape flora. The family business cultivates Proteas, Leucodendrons, and Leucospermums for the international market. Its history dates back to the mid-50s when Spike Ince bought the farm without any orchards or infrastructure.

From Guernsey to the world: The latest innovations in clematis breeding

Introducing their first Clematis from their 2014 breeding programme in 2023, during the RHS Chelsea, the Raymond Evison Clematis breeding programme is now really taking off. This year, three new varieties will be added bringing their assortment to 6 clematis varieties. Colombian flowers to adorn US Capitol

On Valentine's Day, the U.S. Capitol was dressed in Colombian flowers as part of an initiative led by the Colombian Embassy in the U.S., Asocolflores, and strategic partners in the sector. The goal was to highlight the importance of floriculture in the bilateral trade relationship. More than 4,000 roses, hydrangeas, and other varieties, that have been grown and cut in Colombia just a week earlier, are adorning the offices of 535 U.S. congressmen during February.
