How often does it happen that promising ideas get pushed aside? And just as often, you see those same good ideas reappear later, only this time as an innovation project that took the long way around. So how can this delay be avoided? During last week's Future Trends & Innovations event, Loet Rummenie explained in a joint presentation with Victor Meertens of HortiHeroes that start-ups launched within a venture studio grow, on average, twice as fast.
The HortiScience Innovation Center is one of these venture studios. In simple terms, a venture studio is a place where ideas, talent and technology come together. The HortiScience Innovation Center, or HIC, gives greenhouse growers, suppliers and horticultural start-ups the opportunity to test and develop new technologies and production systems, with access to greenhouse facilities, expert guidance and the venture studio itself.
The venture studio helps projects from the earliest concept phase all the way to becoming independent companies, providing access to expertise, infrastructure, networks and resources. Through its field lab facilities, voucher options and venture studio, HIC also offers a structured pathway for greenhouse horticulture partners who want to test, validate or scale up their innovations.

The process runs from a grower's question to validation, from validation to a scalable model and from a scalable model to independent continuation. In other words, from a good idea to a start-up to a scale-up. Within this pathway, HortiHeroes becomes involved in phase two, the start-up stage, and phase three, the scale-up stage.
The numbers show that this system works. On one of his slides, Loet presented data indicating that start-ups developed in this way generate twice the return and are worth nearly four times as much.
Victor and Loet ended their session with a question for the audience. Which challenges would you bring to the venture studio? Which opportunities do you see? They encouraged attendees to share their ideas, as they are eager to explore them further.
