India: Aviation crisis leads to rapid rise in prices

Anil Yeole has lost several lakhs of rupees over the last five days as the IndiGo crisis has triggered a ripple effect across the aviation sector. The flight cancellations and delays have not only inconvenienced passengers but also severely disrupted air cargo services, dealing a major blow to farmers.

The vendor from Mahabaleshwar collects strawberries from around 45 farmers every day to distribute the produce to markets across the country. But, over the last four to five days, none of his consignments have left the Pune airport.Yeole said he makes an average of Rs 4 lakh to Rs 5 lakh in transactions by transporting fruits every day, but everything has now been affected

."We send strawberries to various locations like Kolkata, Chennai and Guwahati. On average, I send around 2.5 tonnes of material every day. If strawberries reach the airport at night, they must get to the destination and market by the next day to avoid damage," he said, and added that since there is no insurance for fruit, growers bear the losses in their entirety.

Pradeep Kumar Singh, the joint general manager (cargo) of Pune airport, told TOI there has been a 55% dip in both inbound and outbound cargo movements since the IndiGo chaos began.
