Looking back at September

Colombia makes first maritime export of ornamental plants

Let's take a look back at September 2025. In the Netherlands, Bunnik Group announced it will wind down all business activities after failing to return to profitability. Meanwhile, Colombia reached a historic milestone with its first-ever maritime export of live ornamental plants to the United States. Investments remained a key theme, with Koppe Begonia opening a new greenhouse in Portugal and Joost Kalanchoë in Brazil investing in conveyor systems. At the same time, market conditions stayed tense, as substrate shortages pushed prices up and extreme weather in Ethiopia led to high flower prices at the Dutch auctions.

"The price of substrates will only continue to increase in the coming months"

The modern climate has led to some tense weeks for the global substrate industry. In the Baltic states, the last harvests are being brought in, but it is already clear that volumes are much lower than last year. Combined with rising worldwide demand, this could result in a global shortage of 10 to 15 percent, and that will be felt across horticulture. As one industry insider put it, "We're going to need every cubic meter we can get."

High flower prices due to low production in Ethiopia

Flower prices at the Dutch auction clock are currently running very high. According to Theo de Mooij of Hoven & de Mooij, this is largely due to extreme weather in Ethiopia. "They've had heavy storms with hail that wiped out as much as 80% of production at some farms," he explains.
