The vast potential of Indonesia's ornamental plant industry has prompted the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to intensify sustainable research through innovative horticulture programs. Breeding and adaptive cultivation strategies are the main focus to meet growing global market demand.
During the HortiActive #23 Webinar on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, BRIN highlighted the theme "Innovation and Development of Ornamental Plants: From Breeding to Cultivation." The agenda underscored economic opportunities and the importance of applied research with direct impact. Puji Lestari, Head of BRIN's Agricultural and Food Research Organization (ORPP), said Indonesia has a competitive advantage thanks to its biodiversity and tropical climate.
"The development of ornamental plants has a strategic position in modern and sustainable agriculture," Puji said in Jakarta on Saturday, December 20, as quoted by BRIN.
She emphasized that the sector contributes significantly to the national economy, tourism, and environmental preservation, and urged synergy among BRIN, academics, local administrations, and business actors to ensure the widespread application of research results.
