US (FL): Celebrating 78 years of serving the Miami community

Berkeley Florist Supply (BFS), Miami's oldest and largest floral wholesale institution, is celebrating 78 years of serving South Florida's floral community and honors 60 years of continuous leadership under its owner, Morey Moss. Located in Allapattah, just minutes from Miami International Airport and close to everything, Berkeley Florist Supply has remained a cornerstone of the region's floral industry since opening its doors in 1947.

A true Miami original, Berkeley Florist Supply has survived and thrived through every chapter of the city's history: economic shifts, cultural changes, hurricanes, recessions, and even the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19. Through it all, the business has been guided with the same steady hand: Morey Moss, who took ownership in his mid-20s and has continued to run the company with passion, consistency, and dedication for six decades.

Today, in his 80s, Morey is still at the warehouse every single day the business is open, welcoming customers, sharing stories, and continuing what has become a lifelong mission—to bring flowers, joy, and connection to thousands of florists across Florida and the United States.

A history rooted in Miami's story
Berkeley Florist Supply was originally modeled after a Boston wholesale florist of the same name — the name "Berkeley" is borrowed in honor of those roots. In 1965, at just 25 years old, Morey, a University of Miami accounting graduate and U.S. Army Reservist, purchased the company. At that time, Berkeley was a modest operation with six employees and a 6,000-square-foot building.

Today, under Morey's leadership, Berkeley Florist Supply employs more than 35 staff members and operates from a 22,000-square-foot facility. Through economic swings, world events, and even global pandemics, Berkeley has remained a constant — never missing a weekly payroll in 60 years, even during closures such as those prompted by Hurricane Andrew and COVID-19.

From its earliest days, Berkeley Florist Supply has played a role in the major celebrations and defining cultural moments throughout Miami's history. While BFS is not a florist, its flowers and supplies have been used by florists to create arrangements for some of the most iconic events ever held in South Florida.

At one time, flowers sourced from Berkeley Florist Supply were seen decorating everything from the visit of the Pope to Miami, Gloria Estefan concerts, international festivals, cultural and sporting events, weddings, celebrations, and community traditions.

From one of Miami's only wholesalers to a player in the industry
When Berkeley Florist Supply began, it was one of the only — and at times the only — floral wholesale companies in Miami. Today, Miami is the floral gateway of the United States: it is estimated that around 90% of the flowers used in the U.S. pass through Miami. That has created one of the most competitive floral markets in the world. Wholesalers like Berkeley now compete with major importers, large distributors, and multinational flower companies.

Yet Berkeley Florist Supply has remained strong for 78 years because it has never strayed from its roots. Through every shift in the industry, BFS has relied on the Miami floral community that it has served and treated like family for decades. That loyalty, trust, and sense of community remain at the heart of the business — and are the reason Berkeley continues to operate with pride, tradition, and purpose.

A generational institution
For many customers, Berkeley Florist Supply is more than a wholesaler — it is a family
tradition. Some customers who shop every Saturday once came as children with their grandparents, and now return as business owners, designers, or hobbyists themselves. BFS has earned its place as an institution woven into the story of Miami and the fabric of South Florida's floral culture.

The company proudly serves florists from South Miami to the Florida Keys, and all the way north toward Okeechobee, remaining the oldest and largest floral supply and wholesale house in South Florida.

That generational loyalty has extended beyond the floral community and into the broader story of the city itself. The City of Miami recently highlighted Berkeley Florist Supply as one of Miami's long-standing iconic businesses, recognizing the company's enduring contribution to the city's commercial and cultural history. Berkeley Florist Supply is honored to be included among Miami's legacy institutions.

"Berkeley Florist Supply has been my home for 25 years. From day one, Morey believed in me and supported my growth, not just professionally but personally. That kind of leadership creates loyalty; you don't just work here, you become part of a family. After all these years, I still look forward to coming in every day, and I'm proud to be part of a company that truly stands by its people and its community," said Frank Roman, General Floral Manager.

A legacy that continues to bloom
Morey says it best, "I wake up to my beautiful wife, and then I come here and see beautiful flowers every day — that makes me love my life. I want to share that love of flowers with everyone who walks through these doors."

That love can be felt in every cooler filled with flowers from around the world, in the friendships built over decades, and in the loyalty of customers who once came in holding their grandmother's hand — and now arrive with children of their own.

"Berkeley is part of Miami, and Miami is part of Berkeley," is a phrase often repeated by long-time customers. For 78 years, the company has stood strong, blooming through every season of change, and with Morey Moss still leading at the helm after 60 years, its legacy is far from over.
