English roses introduced in Querétaro to diversify local flower production

In the community of El Organal, located in the municipality of San Juan del Río in the state of Querétaro, production of English roses has begun as part of an effort to diversify the range of flowers grown in the region. Initial plantings focus on light coloured varieties.

Alejandro Chávez Martínez, a grower at Aris Flor's greenhouses, explained that field trials were carried out in recent years to introduce these rose varieties, which are characterised by their multiple star shaped petals and a fragrance reminiscent of old garden roses.

Production is now underway, although Chávez Martínez acknowledged that English roses are not yet widely demanded in the local market. Nevertheless, awareness is growing and orders are gradually increasing. Known locally as English roses, the flowers are visually similar to peonies and stand out for their star shaped centres when fully open. Current colour ranges include white, red and soft pink tones.

The main destination for these roses is Guadalajara, where they are mainly used in wedding bouquets and quinceañera arrangements. The flowers are shipped in bundled packages for commercialisation.

According to Chávez Martínez, English roses play an important role in event floristry, particularly for bridal and fifteenth birthday arrangements, as they give bouquets a distinctive look. Market demand tends to follow colour trends, with pink, white and vintage tones currently the most sought after.

In terms of pricing, a bundle of English roses can reach around 600 Mexican pesos, depending on flower quality. Although only a limited number of greenhouse rows in El Organal are currently dedicated to this variety, producers expect production to increase in 2026 as demand continues to grow.

Chávez Martínez added that cultivation practices have been refined over time through greenhouse trials to assess climate suitability, humidity, temperature and growing conditions. While pink tones currently dominate production, plans are in place to expand the colour range in order to offer more options to buyers in the future.
