On Thursday, January 22, 2026, a trial visit was held at Certhon to explore new Phalaenopsis cultivation systems. Around thirty growers and cultivation specialists gathered to discuss the initial results and to closely examine the follow-up trials. Robert Solleveld reports on behalf of Kas als Energiebron.
The afternoon's keynote speaker was researcher Sander Hogewoning of Plant Lighting, who, as a project leader, is closely involved in ongoing Phalaenopsis research. He began with the key question: is it possible to make a system leap towards more efficient Phalaenopsis cultivation? The study compared four different cultivation systems at Ter Laak, Opti-Flor, LKP, and Certhon. The greenhouses at Ter Laak and Opti-Flor serve as the practical benchmark. LKP has a semi-closed greenhouse with vertical air movement from the cultivation tables. And at Certhon, the cultivation is completely daylight-free.
After the presentations, participants had the opportunity to visit the two 150 m² daylight-free climate cells. There, they observed, compared, and asked questions. The afternoon concluded with an open discussion, bringing together practical experiences and research insights.
