Nitin Malakar of Maheshwar in Khargone district has demonstrated that with vision, technology, and determination, agriculture can be transformed into a profitable and dignified enterprise. He is a former Deputy Manager (Engineer) with JSW Group, Malakar left behind a well-paying corporate career to pursue modern farming.
An Industrial Production Engineering graduate, Malakar spent nearly 12 years working in Alibaug, near Mumbai. Exposure to advanced farming practices during his professional tenure, particularly in Pune, inspired him to rethink his family's traditional agricultural roots and explore high-value horticulture.
In 2020–21, Malakar took the decisive step of returning to Maheshwar and investing in protected cultivation. He established a polyhouse on one acre (approximately 4,000 square metres) of land and began commercial rose farming. With technical guidance from the Madhya Pradesh Department of Horticulture, he applied online to the National Horticulture Board and secured a ₹4 million loan from Madhya Pradesh Gramin Bank, of which ₹2.8 million was received as government subsidy.
Inside the polyhouse, Malakar planted around 32,000 rose plants of premium Dutch varieties such as Jumelia, White Avalanche, Revival, and Top Secret. The setup yields an average daily production of 1,600 to 1,700 stems. His roses cater to local markets, Jaipur's wholesale flower markets, and export channels.
