UK: Looking back on two years of peat-free plug propagation

Seiont Nurseries' propagation unit is the centre of the nursery's work. This is where all young plants are produced before being grown on and supplied to different markets. The unit handles both plug production and the nursery's own P9 plants, helping to ensure uniform quality and reliable results across the whole business.

In each production cycle, large numbers of plants are started from cuttings and Stage III tissue culture. After this early stage, the plants are grown on and supplied to many different channels, including garden centres, supermarkets, DIY stores, online retailers, living wall projects, amenity planting, and a wide network of grower-retailers throughout the UK and the EU.

After several years of testing and development, Seiont fully moved its own propagation to peat-free systems in January 2024. This step built on more than 15 years of experience growing peat-free P9 plants and ongoing improvements in growing methods. Today, all in-house propagation uses three main peat-free growing media systems, which have proven to give stable and consistent results.

Now in its third year of fully peat-free propagation, the nursery continues to increase production. Alongside its core range of shrubs and perennials, Seiont is also growing and introducing new varieties from breeders in the UK and other countries. Recent additions include Coprosma Northern Lights, Cortaderia Gold Dust, Polemonium Violet Heart, Tropicolour Salvia, Parahebe Blue Avalanche, Hebe Colour Dream, and Daphne Mary Rose.
