RCS 2.0 implemented at Colombian carnation grower

The global rollout of RCS 2.0 enters its next phase following a commercial launch in three major markets. The technology is now being deployed across a wide range of production environments and market conditions, marking its shift from an innovation initiative to a fully operational solution.

Selecta one strengthens its position with the successful commercial implementation of its new RCS 2.0 rooting system in collaboration with Colombian carnation grower, Colibri Flowers. The trial confirms the system's efficiency, sustainability, and operational benefits, marking a key milestone in modern plant propagation. It also highlights the value of strong, collaborative partnerships across the horticultural value chain.

Efficient, sustainable, and ready for the future
RCS 2.0 is a next-generation propagation system that roots cuttings offshore in biodegradable paper bags, without substrate and with minimal energy input. The compact, ready-to-use rooted cuttings are delivered in paper strips and can be potted manually or fully automated. This integrated solution allows faster handling, reduces labor requirements, and supports consistent quality.

Colibri's trial confirms strong rooting performance
The trial was conducted at Colibri's facilities in Colombia under standard commercial conditions. Results from four hard-to-root carnation varieties show that substrate-free rooting with RCS 2.0 is highly viable for most tested varieties. In several cases, it delivered better rooting results than the current standard method under the same operational conditions.

Additional plant health benefits were observed, including vigorous initial growth and a reduction in crown rot and node elongation. The more sterile and clean system contributed to these improvements.

"The RCS 2.0 system performed extremely well under our standard rooting conditions. We achieved excellent rooting percentages without changing our irrigation, biological preventive applications, fertilization, or plant protection routines. The only variable changed was the elimination of substrate, which makes RCS 2.0 very attractive for commercial use," said Alejandro Romero, Head of New Projects, and Santiago Restrepo, Technical Manager at Colibri Flowers.

Efficiency beyond rooting
In addition to strong rooting performance, the system reduces waste, improves transport efficiency, and lowers space requirements throughout the process. The trial demonstrated clear logistical advantages, with significant gains in storage and handling efficiency. Growers were able to maximize space on rooting benches and improve internal logistics planning.

"One of the biggest advantages we observed with this partnership was the optimization of space and handling. The higher density per basket and reduced material volume clearly improved Colibri's internal logistics and storage efficiency," commented Oscar Cuartas, Sales Representative for Selecta one.

A true win-win partnership
This collaboration reflects a genuine win-win partnership. Growers benefit from improved efficiency, reduced substrate use, lower waste volumes, and more streamlined processes. At the same time, Selecta one strengthens its role as a solution provider for sustainable, future-oriented propagation. The project underscores a shared commitment to innovation, efficiency, and sustainability.

"This trial shows the value of close collaboration with Selecta one. Together, we tested an innovative solution that benefits both sides: improved efficiency for us and valuable practical feedback for further development at Selecta one," added Andres Toro, CEO at Colibri Flowers.

"This successful implementation proves that RCS 2.0 is not only an environmentally responsible solution, but also a highly efficient and economically attractive system for growers. By working closely with our customers and partners, we are developing solutions that add value across the entire production chain," said Per Klemm, CEO of Selecta one.

Setting new standards in plant propagation
RCS 2.0 continues to validate its performance while gathering further insights from real-world applications. Selecta one has ensured that RCS 2.0, along with the key production and handling processes, is protected through a robust family of patents. In addition to selling its own genetics in RCS 2.0, Selecta one will also offer system licensing.
