Grower For a Day

What it takes to grow millions of high-quality orchids each year

Decorum has uploaded a new episode of its Grower for a Day series. In this edition, Michael Perry – also known as Mr Plantgeek – spends a full day behind the scenes at Bernhard Orchids, discovering what it truly takes to grow millions of high-quality orchids each year.

From the arrival of young plants and strict quality selection to the creation of distinctive cascade ("waterfall") shapes, Michael experiences firsthand how craftsmanship, innovation and teamwork come together. He even steps onto the production line himself to learn the precision involved in shaping a cascade orchid. A process where timing, balance and attention to detail make all the difference.

Bernhard Orchids has been growing Phalaenopsis since 2007 and combines advanced technology, modern internal transport systems and camera based sorting with a passionate team dedicated to quality. Sustainability plays a key role as well: their Elegant Phalaenopsis is grown 100% energy neutral using geothermal energy and 50,000 (floating) solar panels.
