Ecuador: Using vacuum-cooling technology to boost postharvest precision

Agroideas has announced the successful commissioning of an 8-pallet Vacuum Cooling system featuring integrated industrial chiller technology and a glycol circuit in Ecuador. The installation represents a technical advancement in postharvest process optimization for the region's floriculture sector.

The system is now operating under commercial conditions and was engineered to enhance thermal stability during the critical initial cooling phase after harvest. By integrating an industrial chiller with a glycol circuit, the configuration enables enhanced temperature control and improved heat dissipation compared to conventional vacuum-only systems.

Efficiency beyond the vacuum
In Ecuador's and Colombia's export-driven flower industries, cooling precision directly influences consistency throughout the cold chain. This integrated configuration supports a more stable operational flow, improved utilization of cold room space, and a more uniform temperature profile before shipment.

"Cooling is not simply about reaching a target temperature," says Juan Yazbek, CEO of Agroideas. "It is about maintaining stability and control from the moment the flower leaves the field. When stability improves at the source, the entire postharvest chain—and ultimately vase life—benefits."

Unlike traditional configurations, the integrated chiller system helps manage thermal fluctuations more effectively, an important factor in both daily operations and high-volume production cycles.

Strategic regional outlook
According to Agroideas, this installation forms part of a broader regional vision aimed at strengthening postharvest infrastructure across Ecuador and Colombia. As global markets continue to demand greater consistency, longer vase life, and operational efficiency, precision cooling becomes a strategic component of competitiveness.

Agroideas will continue monitoring system performance under commercial conditions and plans to share further technical insights and operational observations with the industry in the coming months.
