Walking around Vietnamese wholesale flower markets or retail stores, both online and offline, it's not difficult to find pots of azaleas, cymbidium orchids, phalaenopsis orchids, or bouquets of roses originating from abroad, mainly China. They are displayed alongside locally grown varieties of the same name, creating a colorful market but also causing worry and disheartening feelings among many flower growers.
Although the issue of imported flowers is not new, the level of competition is becoming increasingly fierce. Imported flowers, especially from China, often have a significant advantage in terms of price or uniqueness and variety. This creates immense pressure on farmers and flower businesses in Da Lat, particularly in the domestic retail segment – where price sensitivity often influences the purchasing decisions of the majority of consumers.
More importantly, besides price competition, there is also ambiguity regarding the origin and source of imported flowers, and the exploitation of the established brand reputation of Da Lat flowers to label imported flowers as "Da Lat flowers".
The current situation of cheap, unverified imported flowers being sold is putting significant pressure on the market. Regarding this issue, Mr. Phan Thanh Sang, Chairman of the Da Lat Flower Association, stated that a large quantity of imported flowers currently enters Vietnam. While this diversity of varieties presents a challenge, from a positive perspective, it also motivates Da Lat flower growers to change their production mindset.
