A recent history
Ball is a fourth-generation, family-owned business that has operated for more than a century with a focus on environmental responsibility and the well-being of its employees, partners, and communities. Since George J. Ball founded the company in 1905, that long-term perspective has shaped how the business grows and evolves. Five years ago, to help create a more sustainable future and support its mission to Color the World™, Ball launched its 2030 sustainability strategy. The plan centers on three corporate goals, each modeled after a United Nations Sustainable Development Goal: ensuring 100% of employees earn a living wage by 2025, reducing its corporate carbon footprint by 50% by 2030, and achieving zero discharge of hazardous pollutants and chemicals by 2025.
"To help us achieve these goals, we're tapping into the creativity and passion of our Ball employees around the world," says Susannah Ball, Sustainability Lead for Ball Horticultural Company. "With this roadmap in-hand, Ball is evolving to a more formalized approach to sustainability disclosure, and laying a foundation for future reporting in alignment with international standards and requirements."
Into the future
As a leader in the research, breeding, production, and distribution of horticultural products, Ball recognizes its responsibility to care for its people, the planet, and the communities it serves. With operations in 20 countries across six continents, the company's reach is significant, and so is its opportunity to make a positive impact. "Sowing Sustainability" reflects the collective effort of the global Ball team and their shared commitment to building a more sustainable company.
"Within its pages, 'Sowing Sustainability' celebrates achievement and paves the way for the critical work ahead," says Seth Reed, Sustainability Lead for Ball Horticultural Company. "It is our hope that the report also inspires others in the industry to take bold steps and create a more sustainable future."
