International Orchid Show and Floral Technology Exhibition opens

"Taiwan aims to showcase its evolution from a traditional flower producer to a global leader in floral technology"

The "2026 Taiwan International Orchid Show (TIOS) and Floral Technology Exhibition (FTE)" officially commenced on February 27 at the Floral Industry Innovation Park in Tainan, Taiwan. Themed "Blooming Taiwan," this year's dual event marks a strategic shift for the industry, focusing on three core pillars: industrial regeneration, global connection, and social resonance. By blending cutting-edge AI technology with immersive displays, Taiwan aims to showcase its evolution from a traditional flower producer to a global leader in floral technology.

To mark the start of the festivities, the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) hosted a grand Opening Gala on February 26. The event was attended by over 300 dignitaries, including President Ching-Te Lai, Minister of Agriculture Junne-Jih Chen, and various international industry representatives, signaling a high level of governmental commitment to the sector. President Lai emphasized that TIOS serves as a vital bridge connecting Taiwanese growers with major global buyers. ''In the face of rapid market fluctuations and rising climate risks, Taiwan's orchids are more than just agricultural products; they are carriers of our culture and values.'' Lai stated. He shared his vision for the industry to mirror the global success of Dutch tulips, leveraging Taiwan's cultural soft power to generate significant industrial value and enhance the livelihoods of local farmers.

This vision of global connectivity was immediately reflected in the robust commercial activity reported by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA). In the opening Gala, TAITRA announced the impressive results of this year's Orchid Procurement Meeting, which facilitated 224 one-on-one sessions between 32 major international buyers from 20 countries and 37 leading Taiwanese suppliers. These negotiations generated an estimated US$23.46 million in business opportunities—a 3% increase over last year—underscoring the resilient global demand for Taiwan's premium orchids.

President Lai also outlined a strategic roadmap for infrastructure, noting that the Floral Innovation Park is poised for significant growth. With the second-phase expansion now generally approved, the park will scale from 200 hectares to nearly 300 hectares. This strategic expansion, combined with the deployment of AI and emerging technologies to optimize production, aims to bolster Taiwan's global edge. The government anticipates that these initiatives will drive annual exports to NT$2.4 billion over the next ten years, while generating 3,000 new employment opportunities for the local community.

On February 26, a distinguished panel of domestic and international judges evaluated more than 1,000 orchid entries to select this year's top competition winners. Showcasing the pinnacle of horticultural achievement, the venue brings together these award-winning specimens. This curated collection is a powerful display of Taiwan's R&D capabilities and its high standing on the international stage. A new 360-degree immersive layout ensures that the grand champions are visible from every angle, allowing for a close-up appreciation of their perfection. More than just a floral display, the pavilion celebrates the long-term innovation of Taiwan's breeders. Visitors can also engage with expert guides who share the fascinating stories behind the breeding process and the rigorous standards of orchid evaluation.

Beyond being a mere visual spectacle, the 2026 TIOS and FTE represent a pivotal milestone in the strategic modernization of Taiwan's horticultural sector. By converging high-tech integration, aesthetic excellence, and robust commercial activity, the event underscores Taiwan's commitment to industrial upgrading and global leadership. We cordially invite people from home and abroad to come to the Floral Industry Innovation Park (Tainan City, Houbi District, Wushulin, No. 325) between February 27 and March 16 to share in this exciting moment in the dazzling blooming of Taiwan's orchids.
