“After 50 years, it was time”: Evergreen Floral Farms acquires Obra Verde Growers

After 50 years at the helm of Obra Verde Growers, Joe and Julie Walker have decided it is time for a new chapter. The California-based nursery has been acquired by Evergreen Floral Farms, marking a transition that ensures continuity for customers, employees, and breeding partners alike.

A 50-year legacy in native plants
Obra Verde Growers was established in 1974 by Joe and Julie Walker, specializing in the production of Australian, New Zealand, and South African native plants. Over the decades, the company expanded its varietal selection and moved into the liner and plug trade, supplying both the cut flower and landscape sectors. Today, the nursery is recognized as one of the largest liner producers for these varieties in the United States.

Reflecting on the decision to sell, Joe explains: "After 50 years of building our company, Obra Verde Growers, we decided it was time for us to take some time off, do some traveling and spend more time with our children and grandchildren."

A natural fit
The sale came about organically. "We never listed the business, but word was out that we had been considering selling," Joe shares. "Andy and Laura Cedano, the owners of Evergreen Floral Farms, were visiting our nursery to purchase some plants when we mentioned we were considering selling. They said they would be interested and to let them know more when we were ready. When we reached out, they agreed to purchase the property and business immediately."

According to Joe, Evergreen is well positioned to take Obra Verde forward. "Evergreen has experience with some of the items we grow as they use them in their fresh cut flower operation. Their flower operation consists of many Australian and South African natives which is Obra Verde's specialty."

With more than 250 acres of production, Evergreen is currently expanding its varietal range and sought a propagation facility to support its plans. "They are in the process of adding more varieties to their over 250 acres of production and wanted to buy a propagation facility to grow plants for their project," Joe explains.

The acquisition also ensures continuity for existing contracts. Evergreen will assume production of multiple orders for the 2026–2027 seasons, including plant material under contract with Star Roses and Plants, Ball Ornamentals, Plant Haven and Concept Plants. In addition, Obra Verde Growers maintains many non-contracted varieties that further broaden its plant palette.

Business as usual for customers
For customers and suppliers, the message is clear: continuity is key. "All of our customers whether they order through a broker or buy directly will be treated exactly the same as before the sale," Joe emphasizes. "All orders currently on file will be honored and all brokers will continue receiving our current availability."

Looking ahead
A significant aspect of the transaction was the continuation of the company's identity. "Buying our business along with our name was a big factor in this transaction," Joe notes. Future plans include expanding production, increasing varietal selections, and continuing the propagation of Australian, New Zealand, and South African native liners for both the landscape and cut flower industries.

When asked what he is most proud of, Joe reflects on the relationships built over five decades. "There are many accomplishments that we have made over the last 50 years, so choosing the ones we are most proud of is difficult. I think some of the ones that stand out are the relationships we have established with many clients, breeders and friends. Also, equally as important is the role we have been part of introducing many new cultivars into the cut flower and landscape industry."

Supporting the transition
Although stepping back, Joe will remain involved during the handover. "I plan to stay on as an advisor for a short period of time to help the new owners with the business operation by making sure they are familiar with all of the varieties, their care and growing needs. We want to make sure they are successful and help give them the confidence to continue to grow."

One aspect of the transition brings particular comfort to the Walkers. "The owners of Evergreen took over the business and decided to keep all our employees, some of whom have been with us for over 30 years. This gesture is very comforting to us as we feel through all of their years of loyalty and hard work, they are like family to us."
