In the coldest region of Kazakhstan, near Astana, local greenhouse production of tulips is developing alongside large-scale imports. One greenhouse complex prepared around 150,000 tulips across 35 varieties for the March 8 peak demand period.
The project marks the first harvest for a family-run business that previously relied on imported flowers. Planting material was sourced from the Netherlands, with bulbs planted within a limited timeframe of two to three weeks. Production required strict control of temperature and humidity to maintain quality and prevent disease.
Local cultivation reduces logistical risks associated with imports. Previously, shipments from Belarus and Russia faced delays at borders and inconsistencies in delivered volumes. With domestic production, growers expect a more stable supply for retailers, particularly during peak periods.
Wholesale handling and retail preparation intensify ahead of the holiday. Flowers are sorted and bundled in standard units, with additional support labor involved during harvest. Retailers report that tulips remain the primary product, alongside roses and mixed bouquets.
Despite growth in domestic production, Kazakhstan remains highly dependent on imports. The country imports around 100 million tulips annually. In 2025, total flower imports reached 10,900 tonnes, compared to 12,300 tonnes in 2024 and about 8,200 tonnes in 2023. Supplies come from nearly 50 countries, with Ecuador accounting for around 40% of total volume. Other major suppliers include the Netherlands, Kenya and Colombia, while imports from China have been increasing rapidly in recent years.
Market participants report rising procurement costs. Pre-order prices for tulips start at 700–800 tenge (€1.40–1.60), increasing to 900–1,200 tenge (€1.80–2.40) closer to March 8. Prices have increased by about 20% compared to the previous year.
Competition is intensifying due to lower-priced imports, particularly from China, which is expanding its presence with a wide assortment of flowers at competitive prices.
