China: How Hangzhou turned roadside gardens into art

Recently, the road in Hangzhou, China, has garnered widespread attention on social media, drawing large crowds of visitors eager to take photos. The roadside landscape, featuring a vibrant mix of tulips, Matthiola, snapdragons, violas, dianthus, and more, offers a richly layered and eye-catching display.

According to Chen Mingrong, the project leader from Hangzhou Golden May Ecological Technology Co., the design was carefully planned around the growth habits of each species. "We planted them last December, and by this spring, they had already created a stunning visual effect. The bloom period can last through April," Chen explained. "The color palette mainly consists of bright, youthful shades like soft pink, purple, and rose red. Since tulips have a relatively short blooming time, we paired them with tall varieties of Matthiola and primrose. This ensures that even after the tulips fade, the overall structure of the landscape remains intact and visually appealing."

"Through thoughtful design and close observation, our goal is to present plants at their best to the public. With such a wide variety of flowers available in the market today, it's essential to understand their characteristics and arrange them thoughtfully in terms of color and layering to maximize their potential. Soil quality also plays a crucial role. We improved the roadside soil with suitable substrates, which has helped extend the flowering period and enhance the overall quality of the plants."
