Reliable spring ranunculus

Quality, uniformity and plant health remain the foundations of successful spring production. At Gartenbau Paul Cox, horticultural engineer Valerie Vreden sees how Ranunculus asiaticus Sprinkles delivers exactly that. The series combines robust genetics with dependable performance in commercial greenhouse production. Key advantages in cultivation include:

  • Strong plant health with fewer corrective interventions
  • Uniform growth supports efficient production and packing
  • Sustainable cultivation through strong genetics and grower support

Spring flowering crops are an important part of the production programme at Gartenbau Paul Cox. The nursery grows four hectares under glass and six hectares outdoors. They produce crops such as Hellebores, perennials and seasonal bedding plants. Ranunculus is one of the key crops for the early spring market. For horticultural engineer Valerie Vreden, quality always comes first. "If the quality is not right, you cannot create value," she explains. That is why careful variety selection plays a major role in the nursery's strategy.

Robust genetics for healthy plants
Within the range, Ranunculus Sprinkles Original has become a reliable fundament. The series is appreciated for its robust plant health and stable crop performance.

"Die Sorten, die wir jetzt haben, sind schon recht robust und haben relativ wenig Krankheiten."
"The varieties we grow now are quite robust and show relatively few disease issues."

In recent seasons, the nursery has also worked with Ranunculus Sprinkles Dwarf, a more compact type within the Ranunculus Sprinkles series. According to Vreden, the crop shows strong uniformity and excellent foliage quality. "I really like Sprinkles Dwarf because it has less yellow foliage underneath and shows very uniform growth."

Uniform crops support efficient production
This uniform growth has practical benefits on the nursery floor. A crop that develops evenly simplifies the handling process later in production. "When plants are uniform, packing becomes much easier," Vreden explains. "That efficiency makes a real difference for the whole operation." The genetics behind Ranunculus Sprinkles Dwarf also contribute to a more sustainable crop. Strong plants require fewer interventions and remain healthy throughout the production cycle. For many growers, that reliability is key when looking to reduce inputs while maintaining quality.

Close cultivation support makes the difference
Support from Schoneveld Breeding is another factor Vreden values highly. Regular contact and practical advice help optimise the cultivation of both Ranunculus Sprinkles Original and Sprinkles Dwarf.

"Die Begleitung ist optimal. Ich kann jederzeit anrufen, wenn ich eine Frage habe."
"The support is excellent. I can call anytime when I have a question."

Through this collaboration, the team at Gartenbau Paul Cox continues to refine its production strategy for Sprinkles Dwarf and Ranunculus Sprinkles Original. The combination of strong genetics and close technical support provides growers with more control over their crop. Whether the production area for Sprinkles Orginal will expand in the future largely depends on customer demand. However, for Vreden the most important factors remain unchanged: plant health and consistent quality.

"Healthy plants and quality always come first," she concludes. "That is why we continue to rely on Ranunculus Sprinkles."
