Photo report: a greenhouse full of colorful ranunculus

At the nursery of Monarch Flowers in the Netherlands, buyers, designers, florists and other trade visitors have been walking the rows of a new greenhouse filled with colourful ranunculus varieties. The open days, organised in collaboration with breeder Green Works and sales organisation Coloríginz, drew strong attendance, including international visitors.

"In the show greenhouse we are presenting our current range — Ranunculus Romance, Ranunculus Butterfly, Ranunculus Crown and Ranunculus Brushmark — alongside new varieties that are not yet commercially available," says Cock van der Hoorn of Coloríginz. "Based on the reactions and feedback from customers and visitors, we make a final selection for the next season. The colours are particularly well received, but stem length and flower size also stand out."

Coloríginz works closely with breeder Green Works and grower Monarch Flowers, handling all sales through its own channels and online platform.

Gijs Laan, who joined Green Works on 1 March, guided numerous visitors through the greenhouse during the open days. "There was strong interest not only from the Netherlands, but also from abroad. I led a group of sixteen Americans around who were genuinely amazed. The Ranunculus Brushmark, with its painterly streaks on the petals, was a particular favourite. They would all have happily taken home a large bunch."

The cultivation season in the Netherlands runs from mid-March to late April or early May. After flowering, the plants die back and form claw-shaped tubers in the soil. These are lifted in June, treated and then shipped to partner growers in Italy and Kenya. Through this supply chain, Ranunculus Butterfly is available year-round via the Coloríginz platform.

The men look back on the open days with satisfaction. "We had very good days with a great turnout in this new greenhouse of Monarch Flowers." To hold on to the 'ranunculus feeling' a little longer, visitors receive a beautiful bunch of Ranunculus Butterfly to take home.
