The flower season in Almería has started later this year due to temperatures, particularly in the case of hydrangeas, one of the province's main spring crops. While in 2025 commercialization began at the end of February, this season it has been pushed back to mid March.

Despite this shift in the calendar, the sector maintains strong production, with a clear focus on hydrangeas, of which more than 450,000 units are produced during the campaign. Alongside this crop, other species such as dipladenia, roses, and plumbago also stand out, within a production model centered on seasonal flowering plants.
Hydrangea supply covers a wide range of formats, from 14 to 35 centimeter pots, in traditional colors such as white, red, pink, and blue or lilac. This is complemented by differentiated varieties such as the Rembrandt hydrangea, a royalty based variety known for its longer shelf life and innovative colors like vibrant green or glory red.

Figueplant is currently the only company producing this variety in Almería, allowing it "to offer a more exclusive and eye catching product while expanding our catalog," says Ariel Durán, sales representative of the Almería based company, which is the largest producer of this plant in the province.
At the same time, rose cultivation features a broad range of varieties and colors, Meiro, which is red, White Night, white, and Adriana, orange, as well as Cepeti, a red mini format variety, all adapted to different market segments.

Strong export orientation
The campaign maintains a clear international focus, with around 80% of production destined for export, especially larger formats, while smaller sizes are more present in the domestic market.
The added value of the product is also reflected at retail level, where a large format hydrangea can reach prices between 120 and 140 euros in florists.
Technical production and specific care
The production process begins in December, with cuttings arriving from France, which are then planted and grown in Almería. Some varieties, such as blue or lilac hydrangeas, require specific treatments, including the application of aluminum sulfate to achieve the desired coloration.

This is a delicate crop that requires a precise balance in irrigation and controlled environmental conditions, although it demands less labor compared to other ornamental plants.
Once the spring campaign ends, farms shift to poinsettia production, also known as Christmas flower, a crop in which many Almería based companies associated with Plantaespaña specialize, consolidating a year round production model.
The flower plant campaign in Almería confirms the sector's strength and specialization, "with hydrangea and dipladenia as the standout spring crops, a clear export orientation, and a growing focus on varietal differentiation to increase market value," says Francisco Rubio, representative of Plantaespaña.
