US (NY): Colgate greenhouse features beautiful plant that smells like 'rotten flesh'

The Colgate University greenhouse features a unique plant from Southeast Asia that emits a powerful, nauseating aroma when it flowers. It smells like rotten flesh, and this week it's in bloom.

The plant, the voodoo lily (amorphophallus konjac), is actually a beautiful plant and requires special conditions in the greenhouse to stay healthy, according to Reyna Stagnaro, the greenhouse supervisor. The reason behind the smell, she said, is to attract flies and carrion beetle pollinators.

The plant has a 7-foot stalk, with a comparable leaf span. Wanna get a whiff of a voodoo lily? The greenhouse is open to the public 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.
