Video: Hurricane just missed greenhouse in Illinois, United States

"There is a tornado and when I turn, you can see the greenhouse here." This video was made by the workers of Havecon, who are building a new greenhouse in Illinois, the United States. Last week, a hurricane just passed by the greenhouse project.

Currently, Havecon is building a 3ha sized greenhouse for Nursery Green Carbon in Illinois. Last month, they worked in the snow and last week, a hurricane just missed the project. "At first, I thought it was not that bad. However, when hearing other stories and looking at this video, you realize the extreme power of the hurricane", explains Henk Verbakel. "Luckily we didn't incur any damage." Today he is flying over to be on site at the project.

Preparations
Is it possible to prepare for a hurricane? "We fasten down everything we can and we hold off placing the glass on the greenhouse. I'd image you would not want to stay underneath the glass", says Verbakel. "Apart from this, we can only hope that the hurricane will pass. Fortunately this is what happened."

When designing a greenhouse in Illoinis we take all other forces into account. "We work with other materials, heavier constructions for higher wind forces. However, we cannot prepare for a hurricane."
