US (NY): Shafer brothers built 15,000-square-foot greenhouse in the Town of Maine

Nanticoke Gardens spent the past several months growing its already deeply rooted presence in the Southern Tier.

The business built a 15,000-square-foot growing facility in the Town of Maine, about two miles up the road from Nanticoke Gardens' primary location on Union Center Maine Highway in West Corners.

"Our biggest issue the last couple years is we run out of plants early in the season," said Peter Shafer, who runs Nanticoke Gardens with his brother, Chip. "The quick solution to that is more growing space."

Nanticoke Gardens will also have more room to sell its plants this season. The Shafers are leasing retail greenhouse space from April through June at Larchwood Farms, on Slaterville Road in Tompkins County, about 11 miles southeast of Ithaca.

Nanticoke Gardens in West Corners will open for the season Monday and close June 30. The Shafers will then start selling plants at Larchwood Farms on April 27 and close that spot for the season on June 15. Both locations will be open seven days a week.

This season, during its peak, Nanticoke Gardens expects to employ at least 25 people. The business has four to five year-round employees.
