AU: Volunteers needed to pick Mother's Day flowers in Bundaberg
Last December, workers planted 6,000 seedlings in Bundaberg and an additional 2,000 in Toowoomba. Chrysanthemums need so many hours of darkness in order to flower, and carefully controlled lighting is used to ensure the plants bloom just in time for the big event.
Workers have previously used lighting during the seedlings phase, but the recent unexpected change in the weather has delayed the timing of the blossoms.
Despite this setback, Mr Atwell said he is confident that the flowers will arrive in time for Mother's Day.
A range of volunteers invest many hours picking and harvesting the chrysanthemums, including people with a disability who are supported by Endeavour Foundation, workers, staff, families, carers, and even students from local schools.
