In the Netherlands, the buds of Hortensias are being stolen because they are thought to have a hallucinatory effect. The buds are crushed, dried and smoked. It is also stated that the leaves create a hallucinating effect. The effect is probably similar to that of marijuana. However, this has not been confirmed by researchers yet. The fact remains that many allotment garden societies are suffering and they even call the junkies a 'plague'.
