AU: Classic bouvardia the flavour of the month at Flowers Victoria

The Flowers Victoria flower of the month is bouvardia. The delicate, snow white Bouvardia which has long been a favourite for brides, including Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton.

Their curious - almost hexagonal - boxy buds are attractive and they carry a “gentle gardenia” fragrance.

Bouvardia blooms have tubular, starlike florets that form a cluster blossom at the end of thin, sometimes woody stems.

In December 2013 Flowers Victoria, the association representing Victoria’s Cut Flower Growers initiated a Flower of the Month campaign to raise awareness for the different varieties grown locally in Victoria.

The bouvardia is native to Arizona and New Mexico in the US.

It is grown as small shrubs in greenhouses and available September to June.

Bouvardia, until only recently, were not common flowers.
