"Flower prices sensitive to logistic costs"

China's Kunming emerging as inland trade gateway

Shifting gears to developing Asia where the 3rd China-South Asia expo just wrapped up, following the Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Corridor Forum last Thursday. The twin events took place in south China’s Kunming, revealing the country’s strategy to create inland commercial gateways.

10 million flowers sold per day. This is Asia’s second largest floral auction center in transaction volume. It’s in southern China’s Kunming.

Prices after auction decide the market prices of flower in China and Southeast Asia. The demand for temperate flowers from China is high in Southeast Asia. China also imports tropical exotics from its Southeastern neighbors.

But flower prices are sensitive to logistics costs. The Kunming-Bangkok highway is just for starters in China’s blueprint to make Kunming a trading hub and gateway for Asia.

Two other roads are also being built that will connect Kunming with Hanoi and Haiphong in Vietnam. And soon, Kunming will be a crucial juncture of a Mekong River area transport network.
