US (TX): Drop in visitors, financial impact of Azalea Trails

Attendance was down for this year’s Azalea Trail event, the Tyler Convention and Visitors Bureau reports, and the weather was to blame.

An estimated 58,974 people participated in the various Azalea Trail activities in 2015, compared to an estimated 68,770 in 2014.

But organizers point out that two of the three weekends saw inclement weather, and cooler temperatures combined with unusually heavy spring rains delayed azalea blooms until the final weekend. The 2015 Azalea & Spring Flower Trail lasted from March 21 through April 5.

“It was definitely the weather,” said Susan Travis with the bureau. “But people were still coming into town, looking at the azaleas, after the event itself was over. We don’t track that, but people did get to enjoy the flowers.”
