US (NH): Grower to close his plant business in Dartmouth

After 25 years of growing and selling plants, Richard George is holding a clearance sale to close his shop, possibly by the end of the month.

Covering up some flowering blooms on the Slocum Road property before a thunderstorm Thursday afternoon, George said it is time.

“It’s a lot of things. The weather affects us, the economy affects us,” he said, declining to comment on whether the decision is related to his brother, former selectman John George Jr.’s upcoming sentencing July 29. George Jr. was convicted by a federal jury on April 16 of conspiracy and embezzlement charges.

“I’ve done this all my life. It’s getting to be too much,” said Richard George, 59.

In May, in a Standard-Times feature on his business, George said sales were slow and that he was anxious to clarify that his business was separate from his brother’s.

Richard George and his wife, Patricia, use a small portion of the property owned by John George Jr. to grow and sell herbs, shrubs and flowering plants.
