Canada: A floral tribute to the Pan Am Games
“We are doubly excited because of the tie in to the rowing events, which started on July 11, and are being held nearby at the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course,” said grower Anne Marie Van Nest.
The summer show includes both floral display and sports tribute. “Sue Stoll, our showhouse display gardener, has been very creative and featured golf, archery, cycling, rowing, gymnastics, and soccer in our Pan Am Games tribute.”
This was my first summer visit to the Floral Showhouse. I’ve always imagined that it would be too hot indoors to really enjoy the displays in the summer. Well banish that thought. It was a typical July day, hot and humid, and yet the greenhouse was comfortable, well-concealed fans help to moderate the temperature. Soothing music echoed through the glass houses, tropical birds flitted about, chirping and serenading the summer sunshine, as they went about their day.
While the greenhouse has a definite sports twist this season, the paraphernalia is artfully set among lush plantings — it’s truly a tropical paradise. Dramatic canna, dressed in chic burgundy/black leaves are crowned with hot red flowers that echo a fire-engine red bicycle riding though a lane of silver, yellow and soft green plants. Exotic yellow and green striped canna leaves bear a showy crop of tangerine-orange flowers. Ferns, palms, and a plethora of tropical plants, create a rich tapestry of texture and colour.
