India: flower prices expected to skyrocket as Onam, Varmahalakshmi Festival nears

Flower prices are set to skyrocket within the next few days, with Varmahalakshmi Festival and Onam around the corner. However, what is going to pinch the pockets all the more is the fact that the prices are set to rise beyond the hike observed last year.

Talking with iamin, M Sundar who owns Vinayaka Flower Stall at Russell Market, the prices of flowers will be significantly higher than last year. “As of now, the price of jasmine hovers at around Rs 200 (around 3 USD) per kg. It may go up to Rs 1,000 (around 15 USD) on August 28; the day Varmahalakshmi Festival and Onam is celebrated. The surge in the price of flowers will start from Thursday since most people buy flowers a day before the auspicious festival,’’ he said.
