US: Orchid greenhouse advices Seasons Garden Club members about growing orchids

On Sept. 1, 2015, members of the Four Seasons Garden Club visited Lines Orchids on Signal Mountain for a tour of the vintage glass greenhouses and advice on growing orchids. This fourth generation business has been at this location since 1947. The original founder, Oliver Lines, began cultivating orchids in 1898 at the age of 14 in Great Britain for Secretary of State Joseph Chamberlain, who was enamored with the flowers. Lines emigrated to the US in 1910 where he continued to distinguish himself through his horticultural skills. The history of the business is detailed on the company website linesorchids.com.

Co-owner Scott McCandless welcomed the group and answered numerous questions. He explained that orchids are epiphytes, shade plants that grow on host plants with their roots exposed to air. Orchids occur naturally in tropical and subtropical forests. The greenhouses contained hundreds of plants of different varieties and in various stages of growth. Some had beautiful, perfect flowers while some have flower stalks that were just emerging.
